Reviews

"Frank Roberts has crafted a beautiful and engaging book on a very difficult Buddhist concept. The idea of "nothingness" has confounded Western Buddhist scholars ever since it was first introduced. Early translators mistakenly assumed it was a nihilistic and negative idea. This book shows that real nothingness is everywhere we look if we rise above our own ideas and thoughts. Nice pictures too!"
---Brad Warner, author of Hardcore Zen and Sit Down and Shut Up.

"Frank's combination of art and insight are evidence that his Zen practice is mature and that he knows the difference between the finger and the moon that it points to. Roberts has done a masterful job of taking an often difficult and misunderstood aspect of Zen and made it available to everyone in a simple and beautiful way. Two Dozen Donuts will have a permanent spot on my coffee table."

"In the world of Chan, we often speak of the importance of looking inward to find our True Self --- our "Buddha Nature." Sometimes, though, the act of looking outward can do the same thing. Whens the heasrt and mind are clear the act of looking outward is no different from looking inward. This is the message of Frank Roberts, artist, poet and Chan priest. His visual reflections unify inner and outer, drawing us into a world where thoughts are like colors on a canvas and images like poetic phrases with no beginning or end. To fully appreciate his art, we must listen with our eyes and hear with our heart."

Openings was produced and published mainly for my family because I had not been back to Indiana for along time and I realized on my trip that I had forgotten how beautiful the Midwest was. My interest, however, centered quickly on old doors and windows that seemed to be always in my path as I travelled through the small towns and industrial sections of small cities on my way to and from my home in Arizona. Although Openings was published mainly for my and my family's enjoyment, I have had so much good response about the book that I have decided to place it on the sale block at lulu.com.
